Coastal Awareness Pupils from Orchard Vale Community School & Instow Primary School spent a morning learningimportant ways of staying safe at the beach in June. Exmoor Search & Rescue met with pupils at Instow Beach where they talked about what could happen as a result of being stranded at sea and explained some useful safety tips.
RMB Chivenor conducted a fly over and demonstrated winching someone to safety, using the Exmoor Search & Rescue team. One of the team was strapped into a stretcher then the helicopter came to the rescue. It hovered over the “patient” letting a winchman down who quickly attached the stretcher before they were then levered up into the helicopter.

Hi Everyone As part of the Barnstaple ‘Tidy Up Our Town’ campaign, which ran during the week of the 7th – 12th June 2010, some of the pupils from Sticklepath Community School visited Anchor Woods in Sticklepath on Thursday 10th June. During the morning, pupils armed themselves with bags, gloves and litter pickers and set about collecting rubbish which had been discarded in the woods. In total around 10 bags of both rubbish and recyclable items were collected. In the afternoon a further group of pupils, again wearing gloves, but this time armed with little red flags attached to sticks, entered the woods and placed the flags on dog foul that had been left by inconsiderate owners. The idea of the flags was to highlight to members of the public who use the woods and specifically dog owners, the growing levels of dog foul which had been left on the main footpath, which runs the full length of the woods. In total the pupils used their entire supply of 116 red flags, to identify these hazards and there were still many others that could not be marked!! During the walk, I was very surprised and alarmed at the number of plastic bags, containing dog muck which had just been thrown into the trees and bushes. This is not only a disgusting habit it is also hazardous to humans, wildlife and the environment. If we are able to gather evidence to prove that a dog owner has acted in an irresponsible manner, then we will seek to prosecute them for littering. During the same week, Richard and I assisted with another 'Tidy up our town' initiative on our beat organised by St Pauls Church, Sticklepath. This initiative took us in and around the Church area, and Old/Middle Sticklepath Hill. On the evening of Wednesday 9th June 2010, Richard and I were assisted by around 30 Cub Scouts from the 51st Cub Pack, which is based in the scout hut at Ellerslie Park. The idea was for the cubs to work in pairs, under our direction, along Bickington Road to monitor the drivers speed in conjunction with our 'Community Speedwatch' initiative. The cubs by assisting us, were also working towards achieving their "Police Badge". This proved highly popular amongst our energetic and enthusiastic young helpers. During this initiative we were alarmed at the speed with which some motorists were driving at. Due to the circumstances, and taking into the consideration the safety of our eager volunteers, we were not able to stop and speak with every motorist who was driving in excess of the 30mph speed limit, but we did speak to several drivers who were travelling in excess of 40 mph and one driver was “clocked” by one of the cubs doing 48mph! As a result of this exercise, 4 warning letters have subsequently been sent out to the registered keepers to advise them to adhere to the relevant speed limits of each road. This excessive speed by some motorists has prompted Rich & I to start carrying out further random speed checks in the area. This will be with an approved and caliberated device able to accurately record vehicle speed with which to carry out speed enforcement, which may ultimately lead to drivers being prosecuted on the spot. Finally I would like to make all Fremington Parish residents aware that on Wednesday 1st September 2010, there will be an opportunity for them to discuss any issues or concerns they have in their neighbourhood with the relevant agency on hand to address the issue. Representatives from Devon Council, The Highways Agency, Local Schools and Higher Education, Housing Associations, etc, as well as ourselves will be in attendance on the evening which will be held at Roundswell Community Centre, Roundswell (next to Sainsbury’s Supermarket) from 7.00pm. Regards LOCAL POLICE SURGERIES: Roundswell: The last Tuesday of each month and is held in the Roundswell Community Centre (around the corner from the main entrance) from 10.30 –11.30am Woodville: The second Tuesday of each month and is held in the Children’s Centre (which is located in the grounds of Sticklepath Community School) from 2 – 3.15 pm 'If you have been a victim of crime and would like assistance, please contact Victim Support on PC 11010 Richard Preston
