POLICE UPDATE.

101 non – emergency number

101 will be replacing the 08452 777 444 non emergency Police contact number. For the next twelve months you can use either number but then it will just be 101 running.
The Government is committed to cutting crime and helping citizens keep their neighbourhoods safe. Key to achieving this is making it easier for the public to contact the police and report crime and disorder. The 2010 British Crime Survey found that only 54 per cent of the public know how to contact their local police if they want to talk to them about policing, crime or anti-social behaviour. Giving people an easy and memorable number to call to contact their local police force could improve reporting of crime and disorder, ease the pressure on 999, and help efficiently and effectively tackle crime and disorder. Calls to 101 will cost 15 pence for the entire call, no matter how long you are on the phone – this applies to both landlines and mobile phones.

Q1: When will Devon & Cornwall Police launch 101?
A: We will be using 101 on 5 September 2011 from 8pm. It will be launched to the public on 19 September 2011 in conjunction with other regional forces.
Q2: Will there be period when the public can use both numbers?
A:  Yes, there will be a crossover period of about a year when both numbers will be in use.
Q3:  I am deaf, deafened, hard of hearing or speech impaired, can I call 101?
A: If you are deaf, deafened, hard of hearing or have a speech impairment, a text phone is available on 18001 101.
The piloted areas report that 101 is well received by the public and has led to improvements in the public’s confidence when calling the police.
Calls to 101 will cost 15p per call, irrespective of how long that call lasts. This cost applies to landlines and mobile phones, the first time that anyone calling about a non-emergency will know exactly how much it will cost them.
In an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened, the public will still call 999.

Metal Thefts
As many of you are aware there have been reports of various items made of metals stolen throughout North Devon. This includes the scrap from Bishops Tawton Primary School where the males collecting the scrap, worth £600, pretended to be the organised workers from a well known scrap metal company. The money was going to be used to build a new building for the schools Thrive project and as had a huge effect on the future plans. There have been reports of solar panels and disused farm equipment amongst the reports.

Some items are difficult to secure but where possible mark your items, this deters thieves as the property can be traced.

Report suspicious activity to the policeRecent Rural Activity
Field gates have been purposely opened which lets horses out, this is a danger to road users as well as causing stress & upset to the horse and its owners. If you are a horse owner please be vigilant, if you are not a member of “Horse Watch” please contact me or visit our website or contact Gina Dale Horsewatch Forcewide

As sheep are kept in such open areas it is very difficult for farmers to implement crime prevention. But all sheep are tagged or chipped and can be traced. By joining "Farm Watch" (Country Watch) you will become part of a community networking system. This is a good way to keep in touch of any local crime trends as well as crime prevention advice.

If you can help with any of the above or if you require any advice please contact us.

Hi Everyone

Police warn of bank card scam
Police are warning the public to be on their guard against card skimming devices attached to bank machines by fraudsters.
The warning follows recent incidents across the Force where skimming devices have been recovered from ATMs.
In the couple of months offences have taken place at cashpoints across Torbay, Teignbridge and Plymouth.
Police urge members of the public to be extra vigilant when using cash points, particularly when they are inputting their PIN number.
Skimming devices work when people enter their details; the machine either states it has dispensed the cash or there is a fault and then no money is forthcoming.
When the user goes into the bank or other premises to raise the issue someone waiting nearby retrieves the device and cash.
A Police spokesperson said: “Police believe this is a highly organised enterprise possibly involving criminals from out of the area. Bank CCTV is being reviewed to target offenders. If a bank machine fails to dispense cash or looks suspicious, we would advise people to stay put and alert the bank or the police.”

One more drink could change everything
Police have launched a campaign to remind people of the consequences of drinking excessively during the winter months.
The “One more drink could change everything…” initiative highlights how one more drink can change a person’s behaviour, and the repercussions of their actions under the influence of alcohol could drastically change the outcome of the night.
Alcohol plays a key factor in violent crime and antisocial behaviour across the Force, and can be linked to nearly half of all violent crimes committed.
A Police spokesperson said: “We want everyone to enjoy themselves over the winter months, and we just want to remind people that too much alcohol can often result in them doing something they may not do whilst sober.
“Remember one drink too many could change the night and could land you with a criminal record.”
Some tips for staying safe and having fun are:
Don’t try to keep up with friends who drink more than you.
Always walk away from trouble.
Eat before you go out to reduce the effects of alcohol.
Drink water regularly during the evening.

And Finally

Yes, it’s that time of the year again………..Halloween and Bonfire night.
With both Halloween and Bonfire nights, fast approaching I would like to remind all readers of the concerns that many residents have in regards to these two events and especially from the point of causing anti social behaviour.

I do not wish to spoil anybody’s fun, but please be aware that not everyone looks forward to these occasions.
If there is a notice in the window asking you not call, please respect their wishes. I would also like to remind all parents, that it is your responsibility to know where your children are at all times.

Prior to Halloween Night, PC Rich Preston and I will be visiting all the shops within the area, asking that no eggs or flour be sold to anyone under the age of 18.

There will be extra police patrols on duty for both of these events.

Please note that it is an offence, for a person who is under the age of 18 years old, to purchase any fireworks, to be in possession of them in a public place and for anybody to throw them in a public place.

Regards,
Tony & Richard
