Entice by Carrie Jones

Entice is the story of Zara – an ordinary girl – or is she? Entice is the third book in the “Need” series. In the previous books Zara has discovered that her father is a pixie, her boyfriend has died and she’s been pixie kissed. But now she knows that her boyfriend is in a warrior heaven called Valhalla. She needs to find a way to go and save him with the help of her friends - Cassidy who is part elf, a human called Issie and Devyn who is Issie’s boyfriend. At the same time she has to help her people, as she is now a pixie queen, and protect the people of Bedford who keep disappearing.

The book is set in Bedford in North America and there are three types of being: the humans, the pixies (some of who are eating humans) and the were. The books are vaguely similar to the Twilight series but they are based on Norse legend. Unlike many books of the gender, they stand out from the crowd and have an interesting storyline. The relationships are complex, especially the one between Zara and Astley, the pixie king who kissed her, making her his queen. Zara’s boyfriend, Nick, is out of the picture until the end of the book but this doesn’t compromise the storyline in any way as the plot becomes more intense and the book is darker than usual.

The books are clearly aimed at teenage girls, although that doesn’t mean that other readers won’t enjoy them too. They are dark but not horrific and there are some slightly comedic characters included which lightens the mood significantly. Entice blends together legend, battle and romance beautifully and would be enjoyable to people who enjoy myth and legend stories. It is far better written than your stereotypical vampire story, so many of which have sprung up since the success of Twilight. It has a good plot and interesting characters.

The book itself is sprinkled with magic, although it may be confusing to people who haven’t read the prequels. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
